What are specialty coffees?

Specialty coffee is a term that refers to the highest quality coffees. It means single-origin or single-farm coffees for the entire supply chain.

Specialty coffee is exceptionally high-quality coffee that is grown and produced with significantly higher quality criteria than average.

The widely accepted definition of specialty coffee is coffee that receives a minimum of 80 points on a 100-point scale used in Specialty Coffee Association cupping evaluations. Coffee that receives 90-100 points is considered exceptional. Coffee that receives 85-89.99 points is considered excellent, while coffee that receives 80-84.99 points is considered very good.

SCA also sets clear standards for coffee classification. In order for coffee to be classified as specialty coffee, it must be hand-picked, score at least 80 points in SCA scoring, and have 0-5 defects per 350g of beans.

At MOKKAPUU, we have wanted to focus on the best ethical coffees, our coffees always score at least 84 on the SCA scale, and each coffee must have programs that promote biodiversity, equality, healthcare, and fair wages. Our SCA score of 84 classifies our coffee among the top 6% in the world and ensures that we have knowledge of the coffee's origin and farmers.
